the heart of screening An introductory course designed to guide and energize the work of novice screenwriters – whether preparing to write a first screenplay, or struggling through a challenging rewrite – by guiding participants directly to the heart of screenwriting: the place where the complex demands of craft meet the living qualities of story.

  • Who: Beginning screenwriters, and those wanting a comprehensive review of fundamentals.

  • *For small seminar groups at intermediate or advanced skill level:
    Scene Writing Clinic How can the scene truly be the “building block of the screenplay?” Working with their own scenes, participants learn the application of screenwriting craft to dramatize story events in the most compelling and forceful manner.

  • Length: One or two days | Number of participants: up to 12


  • *Intensive for experienced screenwriters:
    The Way of the Screenwriter Writing is tough. Rewriting is tougher. And rewriting successfully is toughest. This weekend intensive guides participants with a completed first (or later) draft screenplay to a deeper understanding of their story, strengthens their analytical and creative skills, and leaves them with a concrete plan for a successful rewrite.

  • Note: This workshop can be a highly effective (and cost-efficient) way to story edit a group of feature film projects. Ideally this workshops takes place in a retreat setting.
  • Who: Screenwriters with some professional-level experience
  • Length: From three to seven days | Number of Participants: 4 or 5


  • *For large groups at all skill levels:
    Story is a livning thing Grounded in practical examples from the making of Buchbinder’s own feature films, this workshop offers a wealth of conceptual tools. Exploring the crafts of writing and directing as engagements with living forces of story, to understand the practical and creative challenges faced by writers and directors and the techniques they use to succeed.

  • Who: Anyone committed to gaining a deeper grasp of the creative process of filmmaking.
  • Length: Friday eve., all day Saturday/Sunday, plus advance film screening
